Laser Surgery


A new tool that allows doctors to use laser surgery in complex operations named Omni directional dielectric mirror" was created by Professor Fink in 1995.

ODD mirror is also an important development in fiber optic tool in minimally invasive surgery; until the "ODD mirror" came along there were no fibers that could transport the safer CO2 lasers. Surgeons had to shoot the laser beam directly from its large generator and could do so only at a straight angle, rendering it impossible to reach deeper tissues; for years, doctors were able to treat patients with lasers in only limited circumstances and with many complications.

In a recent case, a patient had a tumor at the base of the brain, a tumor that could not have been previously reached without ODD mirror. Using a scalpel to cut off the tumor would also have been dangerous as the patient's tumor was attached to an important vein. Using the scalpel could have caused a stroke, instead doctor used CO2 laser to melt the tumor and then shave it off.

By taking two materials with different optical properties (one being a semi-conducting glass and one being a polymer) and stacking these two up in very tight and ultra thin layers, around 1 micron each (1/1000 of a millimeter), they create an omni-reflector. By changing only the thickness and distance of the layers, “ODD mirror" could reflect any type of electromagnetic energy in any wavelength, there by enable surgeon to easily manipulate the use of lasers rather than scalpels to operate on everything from tumors, deafness and spine injuries in hard to reach angle and almost every tissues in the body during complex surgery with minimum invasive technique. This type of surgery is known to reduce recovery time, the likelihood of complications and incision size. In many cases, patients also spend less time "under the knife."

Solar Water Heater


The machine includes a large solar panel and a water tank. The panel consists of 18 glass tubes made of stainless steel aluminum nitride cermet that work as the solar-absorbing layer. The gathered heat is then used to warm up the water in the tank.

According to the owner of the house, the 40 gallon tank is enough to replace four electric water heaters previously used in four bathrooms. This replacement saves her about $10 a month on her electricity bills. The owner paid $760 to have the machine installed , both parts and labor including new pipes and other accessories.

Alternative Energy



Garbage buried in airless pockets deep inside landfills, the organic matter in these great mounds of waste is consumed by bacteria that give off gas rich in methane, increasingly used to generate electricity and heat. Landfill methane in New York , New Jersey and Connecticut powers generators that produce a total of 169 megawatts of electricity; the methane also provides 16.7 million cubic feet of gas daily for heating and other direct uses.

Methane production depends on the type of garbage, organic-laden municipal solid waste is the best producer — how old and how tightly bundled it is, the quantity and, especially, weather conditions. Landfills in dry, hot climates produce less; those in steamy, rainy places do best because moisture hastens the decomposition that produces methane.Landfill gas is about 50 percent methane and 50 percent carbon dioxide. Trace ingredients include hydrogen sulfide, which has a noxious odor. Collection systems and flaring largely eliminates odors from these ingredients. Methane itself is odorless.

Landfill methane becomes a greenhouse gas at least 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide if not captured, when it rises into the atmosphere. Capturing methane is a global housekeeping benefit as well as an important alternative energy niche, energy production from landfill methane, while desirable, will go only a short way toward meeting overall energy needs.

Green Power



Cows at Green Mountain Dairy not only produced milk and manure; recently they have generated something else: electricity, methane gas from cow manure is converted into electricity that is sold to the power utility’s grid.

A mechanical scraper sweeps the animals’ waste into a large drain. The waste is then pumped into a huge sealed concrete tank known as a digester, which holds 21 days’ worth of waste and is kept at a temperature of 101 degrees Fahrenheit. Anaerobic bacteria break down the organic matter in the waste, producing a mix of methane and other gases, known as bio-gas. The gas is burned in an engine that runs an electrical generator.
A 1,050 cows farm can produces roughly 250 to 300 kilowatts of electricity daily, enough to power 300 to 350 homes.

The digester produces more than electricity. After 21 days, the waste is pumped through a separator, which siphons off the liquid into a silo and drops the solids into a barn. The liquid manure is used as fertilizer, while the solids are used for cow bedding. The bedding saves the farm owner thousands of dollars a month on sawdust, and they sell the excess to garden stores.

Cluster Bomb Treaty



1. The cluster bomb is dropped from a plane and can fly about nine miles before releasing its load of about 200 bomb-lets.
2.The canister starts to spin and open at an altitude between 1,000m and 100 m releasing and spraying the bomblets across a wide area.
3.Each is the size of a soft drink can and contains hundred of sharp metal pieces. When it explodes, can cause deadly injuries up to 25 m away.


The first of more than 100 countries have begun signing a treaty to ban current designs of cluster bombs, at a conference in Oslo, Norway. But some of the biggest stockpiles countries including USA, Russia, China and Israel are not the signatories; unfortunately the good intention of the treaty to protect civilians worldwide from the horror of these very dangerous weapon of war is not fully embraced by some government of above countries which remain steadfast to the believed that causing massive civilian deaths and casualty is an acceptable act and refuse to end targeting civilians in time of war through their stockpiles.

First developed during world war ll, critics argue that cluster bombs are immoral because of the danger posed to civilians from bombs that do not explode and litter the ground like landmines.
The path to cluster bombs can be traced through the mountains and the rice paddies of south east Asia where several hundred million sub-munitions were dropped and ten of millions remain today. Civilians living in Laos ,Cambodia and Vietnam have lived with the threat from the remain of these unexploded sub-munitions, that have caused so much anxiety and harm to the population for four decade.

Lavatory



No country takes toilets quite so seriously as Japan. The master of the modern convenience is the Panasonic Corporation; a new flush has been invented which does away with the need for a tank and saves dramatically on water.

Machine with heated seats, built-in bidet and a dynamic range of flushing options are almost ubiquitous.

One even sends a tiny electrical charge through the user's buttocks to check their body-fat ratio; it will take a guess at the gender and lifted up the seat as well. The control panel beside the seat and gentle light classical music began to play;a loo that glowed in the dark and another that had built-in loudspeakers with sound effect that provided the impression one was seated upon a white plastic throne surrounded by songbirds in a springtime meadow.

High Definition Television




HDTV will be compatible with the digital TV signals that are going to be the norm once the
analog to digital switchover takes place early next year. Make sure that the television you buy has HDMI input. This is the one-stop-shop cable that gives you both high-quality high definition video and digital stereo and surround sound, making for a better quality home theater experience, not to mention less cable clutter.

HDMI also enables certain TV features such as video up scaling (a feature on televisions and A/V receivers that upgrades standard TV quality to HD quality); you'll want as many HDMI inputs as possible on your TV so that you can plug in all your state-of-the-art components, from cable boxes and DVD
players to video game consoles.

A television with "HDMI 1.3,' is the most up-to-date version and can enable your TV to play the latest video technologies such as Deep Color and audio processing formats such as DTS Master Audio or Dolby HD (of course, you'll also need a television that's capable of showing this stuff and a surround sound home-theater setup to maximize HDMI 1.3). Now, to complicate matters further, not all versions of HDMI 1.3 are created equal, which is why even the HDMI association recommends looking for features -- Deep Color, DTS Master Audio, etc -- rather than HDMI version number .

Alternatively, you can connect these various devices via component video connections, but it's not always the same quality and it means you still have to find a way to connect the audio (via optical, digital audio, or traditional red-and-white cord audio connections). For anything older, such as that VCR you're still using, you'll likely connect via composite video or the slightly better S video connections, both of which are also on most TVs today .
To truly enjoy HDTV, it should be capable of displaying in at least 720p resolution, which is the minimum HD resolution.

Electronic Gadgets



OLED liquid crystal display panel technology is rapidly improving; Sony debuted a flexible (bendable)screen that was only 0.3mm thick; the flexible screen could usher in an era for gadgets with screens that match the contours of the device, not a device that matches the contours of the screen. The flexible screen prototype was 2.5" in size and had a resolution of 169x120 pixels.






Advantages of OLED
:
a), the fabrication process is easy, and devices are thinner and lighter than those fabricated by cathode ray tube (CRT) display technology.
b) there are also some advantages over liquid crystal (LCD) displays: OLEDS can be viewed from different angles and don’t need a backlight.
c) the drive voltage and power consumption are low.

Solar Plane



Helios can reach the height of almost 30,000 meters; such aircraft could supplement communication satellites.

Propulsion: 14 DC brush less electric motors (the power of each motor is 1,5 kW) with two blades, specially designed for high altitude flights. The weight of each motor is less than 5 kg. Length of both propeller blades is 1.7 m.

Speed: Typical flight speed is 30 to 40 km/h. The highest speed is 270 km/h.

Japanese HEV

HEV or hybrid electric vehicle is an automobile that is powered by two sources; an internal combustion engine, and an electric motor. The combination allows the electric motor and batteries to help the conventional engine operate more efficiently, cutting down on fuel use, improve on limited driving range of an electric vehicle. Gasoline-fueled HEVs are among a select few vehicle technologies that can provide dramatically increased fuel economy and extremely low levels of smog-forming and cancer causing emissions, while delivering the safety and performance the public has come to expect.





Accord Hybrid uses Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system. Under the hood you'll find a fairly conventional V6 engine and 5-speed automatic with an electric motor pancake between then. A redesigned front grille and a revised trunk-lid design that includes LED taillights. The car's rear fenders have been restyled to accommodate the new taillights, and the 16-inch aluminum wheels are also new.

Accord Hybrid's gasoline engine (a 3.0-liter V6) is the dominant means of propulsion, with a 14 kilowatt electric motor provides additional power. Honda's hybrid system doesn't allow the electric motor to run on its own — the gasoline engine is always working. The Accord Hybrid's provides a combined 253 horsepower and achieve an estimated 29 miles per gallon in city driving and 37 mpg on the highway. The standard Accord V6 produces 244 hp and gets an estimated 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.






The hybrid version adds a new element to the Camry lineup. Toyota has installed its Hybrid Synergy Drive, which pairs an efficient four-cylinder gasoline engine with a powerful electric motor into the redesigned Camry.

Toyota Camry Hybrid has a twin cam, 2.4 liter, 147 horsepower, 4-cylinder engine, with 138 lb-ft of torque. It has a total of 192 horsepower when combined with its electric motor. It uses Toyota's electronically controlled continuously variable transmission. As well as protecting the environment, The Hybrid features Toyota's Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system, which picks up data from a series of sensors around the car and applies it to the car's range of standard safety features.

The redesigned Camry is quiet, comfortable, and refined. The telescoping steering column is a plus. The 3.5-liter V6 returns 23 mpg overall, while the four-cylinder returned 24 mpg.





The Nissan Altima Hybrid has been certified by the Internal Revenue Service as meeting the requirements for the Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit, thereby qualifying for a tax credit of $2,350, according to a company news release. It is equipped with a standard 2.5-liter, I4, 158-horsepower, hybrid engine that achieves 41-mpg in the city and 36-mpg on the highway. A variable speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The advanced energy drive system shares duties between the gasoline-powered 4-cylinder and the emissions-free electric motor – allowing the Hybrid to run solely on electric power if appropriate, especially during stop-and-go driving. If extra performance is needed, the gasoline engine starts instantly and smoothly adds power as required.

Standard equipment includes 16-inch alloy wheels, Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition, power windows/door locks, 6-speaker AM/FM/CD system with auxiliary audio input jack, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Traction Control System (TCS) and dual-zone automatic temperature control that includes an Altima Hybrid-specific electrically powered A/C that continues to provide cooling when the gasoline engine is stopped. The Regenerative Cooperative Brake System calculates braking force generated by brake pedal operation and controls the regenerative brake force to convert kinetic energy into electric energy, optimizing energy regeneration.

2009 concept vehicles




Volt



GM first concept vehicle application build on E-flex platform.GM consider it an EV with range extending capability despite the fact that it has a 1.0L turbocharged three cylinder engine with 71 hp that has no mechanical connection to the wheels. The ICE runs at about 1800 rpm and drives a 53 kW generator that charges the lithium ion battery pack. The battery pack provides power to a 161 hp (120 kW) electric motor. The battery has a peak output of 136 kW and a total capacity of 16 kWh. The battery can be charged by plugging it in to any standard 110 V outlet and is fully charged in about 6-6.5 hours.

With a fully charged battery, volt has a range of 40 miles,however, when the fuel tank is filled to it's capacity of 12 US gallons of gas, the Volt has a range of 640 miles. In addition, the ICE is fully flex fuel capable and can run on any combination of gasoline or ethanol up to E85. The power-train is sized to achieve 0-60 mph acceleration of about 8.5 seconds.

E-Car




An odd looking three-wheeler, Zap Alias starting price at $30,000 is a two-passenger vehicle with a top-speed of over 100 mph and a range of at least 150 miles per charge. Power to the two seaters comes from two in-wheel motors .

Detroit Electric , the US-China JV that will manufacture and distribute this EV, the officials look forward to bringing new vehicle technologies to market, and new manufacturing jobs to California by 2009.

Tesla Roadster develops a peak torque of 200lb-ft from 0 rpm to about 6,000rpm. Its XTrac two speed gear-box would have provided additional torque multiplication in low gear to help achieve the four-second 0-60mph time, with second gear allowing the car run up to 135mph.

Price at $100,000, this all-electric sports car cruise about 250 miles at a stretch. With a 220-volt, 70-amp charger made by Tesla that is hard-wired into your garage, the roadster will go from flat to flat-out in 3.5 hours. The car will be offered with a cord and a conventional 120-volt wall plug, should you be away from home, but charging time stretches to 33 hours.
The Tesla has a three-phase, 248-hp motor with a 13,500-rpm redline.

Sleek, sporty compact concept vehicle

E-Flex plug-in hybrid technology on display, driving range after leaving the house with a fully charged battery pack and a full tank of ultra-low-sulfur diesel is estimated to be 444 miles. Running on just electricity, it is capable of driving up to 34 miles. The hybrid system incorporates a 1.3-liter turbo diesel engine and a lithium-ion battery pack.

Adding to the futuristic look, this concept crossover has side view cameras, LED headlamps, polycarbonate windows, a panoramic windshield and butterfly-style rear doors. Drive to the wheels is provided by a 53kW electric motor which gets electrons from a 16kWh lithium ion battery, diesel engine.

The battery can be recharged at a household outlet in just three hours. On the road, a clean and efficient 1.3L turbo-diesel cylinder on board engine generates additional electricity to replenish the battery and extend the vehicle's driving range, two high-tech electric Segway® Personal Transporters ingeniously packaged below the cargo floor once docked, the batteries of these modified Segways can be charged along with the vehicle batteries.
